INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background Of The Study
An online newspaper is the online version of a newspaper, either as a
stand-alone publication or as the online version of a printed
periodical.
Going online created more opportunities for newspapers, such as
competing with broadcast journalism in presenting breaking news in a
more timely manner. This particular research topic for computer science students addresses the credibility and strong brand recognition of
well-established newspapers, and the close relationships they have with
advertisers, are also seen by many in the newspaper industry as
strengthening their chances of survival. The movement away from the
printing process can also help decrease costsuch like hard-copy
newspapers and have the same legal boundaries, such as laws regarding
libel, privacy and copyright, also apply to online publications in most
countries, such as in the UK. Also in the UK the Data Protection Act
applies to online newspapers and news pages, up to 2014 PCC ruled in the
UK. But the distinction was not very clear to the public in the UK as
to what was a blog or forum site and what was an online newspaper. In
2007, a ruling was passed to formally regulate UK based online
newspapers, news audio, and news video websites covering the
responsibilities expected of them and to clear up what is, and what
isn’t, an online publication.
News reporters are being taught to shoot video and to write in the
succinct manner necessary for the Internet news pages. Many are learning
how to implement blogs and the ruling by the UK’s PCC should help this
development of the internet. Some newspapers have attempted to integrate
the internet into every aspect of their operations, i.e., reporters
writing stories for both print and online, and classified advertisements
appearing in both media; others operate websites that are more distinct
from the printed newspaper. The Newspaper National Network LP is an
online advertising sales partnership of the Newspaper Association of
America and 25 major newspaper companies.
An early example of an “online only” newspaper or magazine is “News
Report”, an online newspaper created by Bruce Parrello in 1974 on the
PLATO system at the University of Illinois. Beginning in 1987, the
Brazilian newspaper Jornaldodia ran on the state owned Embratel network,
moving to the internet in the 1990s. By the late 1990s, hundreds of
U.S. newspapers were publishing online versions, but did not yet offer
much interactivity.[6] One example is Britain’s Weekend City Press
Review, which provided a weekly news summary online beginning in 1995.
Today, online news has become a huge part of society which leads people
to argue whether or not it is good for society. Austra Taylor author of
the popular book The Peoples Platform argues that online news does not
provide the detail needed to fully understand what actually happened. It
is more just a fast summary to inform people what happened, but does
not give a solution or fixation to the problem.
1.2 Statement Of The Problem
Newspaper as it regards to the journalism profession is characterized by
numerous problems. The problems that characterized the existing system
are actually responsible for the fall in the quality of news production
and presentation. The problems with the existing system include:
i) Reviewing of reports submitted by reports on the field
ii) Identification of errors in the reports, this includes: grammatical errors, spelling errors, punctuation errors etc.
iii) Condensation of reports into meaningful and concise piece
iv) Organization of the reports in an orderly manner for presentation to the audience.
v) And other modifications.
1.3 Aim Of The Study
The aim of this study is to design and implement n andriod based
application system for online newspaper. Specific objectives are as
follows:
To find out new ways of reviewing reports that are far better than the existing method.
To seek a way of editing News that will take less time when compared to the former or traditional method, existing system.
To discover methods of improving the quality of edited piece of news done by the editor.
To uncover an easier way of correcting the errors commonly found in reports from the field directly.
1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Projects provide a flexible framework for engaging students in exploring
curricular topics and developing important 21st century skills, such as
communication, teamwork, and technology skills, In addition students
are motivated by the fun and creative format and the opportunity to make
new friends around the world. For Reporter or news editor, this
application will enable quick and easy way of upload or posting new news
online for easy accessibility.
1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The scope of this study will cover all the activities and processes that
are involved in online newspaper from the submission of news reports to
the final News editing process. These will further lead to the design
and implementation of an android application system blue print for the
automation of news posting.
1.6 LIMITATION OF STUDY
Usually, every work has some limitations and this study is not exempted.
The two major limitations of this study are the high programming
technique as well as financial constraints. The high programming
technique constraint in Titanium JS prevents the researcher to have an
in depth study and analysis on the subject matter. While the issue of
financial constraint limits the frequency of investigation to/from the
institution toward gathering the necessary information relevant for the
study.
1.7 COMPARISON BETWEEN THE OLD AND EXISTING SYSTEM
The current news editing system just like any other manual system is
time consuming when it comes to locating news files thereby causing
unnecessary delay in releasing and publishing information.
Also as the files jackets are paper. They are easily multi rated causing less of vital information about these news.
The news editor sometime misfiles news document, which may lead to
disorder in the information system. There may be low productivity due to
fatigue and lack of concentration by the record clerk.
1. PRODUCTIVITY: the news records are such that they have to be updated
as often as there are changes made to news information. The reason is
to have updated information. The introduction of computerized system
will make the job less time consuming and productivity will be vibrated
to a higher rate.
2. ACCURACY: during news publishing review the accuracy of the news is
defined largely on the ability of the editor to edit very well. And the
effect of human factors such as fatigue can lead to inaccurate
information. But using computerized system can check these lapses
because computers are not influenced by the above-mentioned human
factors.
3. DELAY: in every large establishment or organization the assessment
of files in the file cabinet is very tedious and time consuming. But
with computerized system a lot of time saved because files are assessed
at a very fast rate and the processing is also at a very high speed.
4. COST: This aspect is concerned with the cost of maintaining
individual files of the news information includes the file jacket the
papers and the cost of labor etc. but with the computerized system you
find out that all these things will not be kept again because the files
will be resident in the computer system and it will be updated by dust
on individual as the case may be.
The new system is being designed to satisfy the user requirements such as the following.
i. To enable fast, convenient, secure and easy editing of news information.
ii. Ensure security against data loss
iii. The guide against external interference i.e to an authorized personality by the use of a password.
iv. Maintaining and updating file
v. Adaptation to changes (flexibility)
vi. Easy usage user friendliness.
vii. To enhance the operational speed.
