CHAPTER ONE

1.0     Introduction

  1. 1.1Background to the Study

The term information technology is complex and difficult to define. However, information technology is as old as man, for instance, it affect and is affected by every aspect of human activities including counselling.

In counselling for example information technology means the application of computers and technologies in counselling process.

What then is a computer? According to Sawyer and Williams (2003:3) a computer is a programmable, multi-use machine that accepts data, i.e. raw facts and figures and process or manipulates them into information we can use, such as summaries, tools or reports. It therefore means that the result of the combination of computers and communications technology result to information technology (info-tech). Example of information technology includes personal computers, as well as new forms of telephones, television and various kinds of handheld devices for sending and receiving of information.

In business terms, information technology refers to the management and use of information using computer based tools. It includes acquiring, processing, storing and distribution of information. It is a term used in referring to business application of computer technology rather than scientific application.

The term is broadly in business for they can not exists/operate without some kind of information technology.

However, this study will be based on how information technology affects students’ sexual behaviour. Preventing HIV/AIDS risks and other killer diseases among young people has been identified as a public health priority in Nigeria. Hostels of secondary institutions has been labelled as “glorified brothels” as some students aided and abetted by the hall partners, the apparent freedom from parental control troll and undue pressure from peers engage in high sexual behaviour. This high risk of sexual behaviour is fuelled and unequal power in sexual relation and its alarming implication from both men and women’s ability to prevent the sexually transmission of HIV as unequal parties are unable to negotiate when and how they can protect themselves from STDs and HIV which has a negative effect on the individual affected. This paper examines the sexual and reproductive behaviour of students in secondary schools in relation to the effect of information technology on students in Ethiope East Local Government Area (LGA).

  1. 1.2Statement of Problem

Secondary institutions can not exist effectively without the students and assistance from others which include the parent, students, teachers and other school administrators. Hence, it became necessary for parents, teachers, and the government to be involve in the day to day running of and monitoring of secondary institutions within their various communities, local, state and federal government.

Often in current relationships with teachers who meet their economic or academic needs. Multiple Partnering also fulfil their emotional needs of the students.

However, some women were also said to encourage in sexual harassment by their mode of dressing. In this study, emphasis will be laid on the role, sources and problems of information technology and how it affect secondary students sexual behaviour with particular reference to some rural and urban schools of Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State. Therefore, this study intends to answer this question.

    1. Does information technology have any effect on student of secondary education in rural and urban schools?
    2. Does information technology have different effect between male and female secondary students of rural and urban secondary schools?
    3. Does information technology affect students’ sexual behaviour in rural and urban schools?
    4. 4.To what extent does information technology affect students’ sexual behaviour in secondary institutions of Ethiope East Local Government Area?
  2. 1.4Research Hypothesis
    1. There will be significant differences of the effect of information technology between students in rural and urban secondary students/schools of Ethiope East Local Government Area.
    2. There will be no significant differences of the effect of information technology between male and female students in rural and urban secondary schools of Ethiope East Local Government Area.
    3. There will be no significant differences of the effect of information technology as regard to students sexual behaviour.
    4. There will be no significant differences of the “extent” to which information technology affects students sexual behaviour of students in rural and urban schools of Ethiope East Local Government Area.
  3. 1.5Purpose of the Study
    1. The purpose of this study is to determine whether information technology has any effect on students of secondary education in rural and urban schools.
    2. To know if information technology has different effects on between males and females secondary students of rural and urban secondary schools.
    3. To have the understanding whether information technology affect student sexual behaviour in rural and urban schools.
    4. To know the extent to which information technology affect students sexual behaviour in secondary institutions of education

Specifically, I will find out the effect of information technology on secondary school students sexual behaviour of rural and urban schools identify the school problems and make useful recommendations that will aid the achievement of positive result within the school.

  1. 1.6Significant of the Study

A research whether major or minor is supposed to have a kind of significant thus school administrators, students of secondary schools, post primary, parents and the general public will be addressed on the role of information technology of secondary school students sexual behaviour in rural and urban secondary schools of Ethiope East Local Government Area.

School administration, parents, teachers and the general public will benefit from this research since it will provide them with an insight of the effect of information technology of secondary school students sexual behaviour. It will help to determine the social implication of information technology. It will provide the necessary information on the effect of the internet, television, radio, and magazine. Thus, it will lead to programme improvement and emphasis in terms of what they are doing and what they ought to do in their ventures in the school.

The findings of this research will be very essential to information specialists, counsellors, psychologists and teachers for it will enable them to give the correct guidance to students in our various institution of learning even at the higher level of education.

It will also enable the researcher and the general public to know the various types of sexual behaviour exhibited by secondary school students.

  1. 1.7Scope of the Study          

Certain conditions prevail for learning in different areas, for this reason, the researcher will examine only the effect of information technology on secondary school students sexual behaviour in rural and urban areas of Delta State (Ethiope East Local Government Area to be precise).

The selected sources of information technology include the following:

  1. Internet (major source)
  2. Television (watching)
  3. Radio (listening) i.e. through air
  4. Newspaper/magazines, etc.

In this research, it may not be possible to visit all the sources of information technology to be covered due to time constraint. Some sources could not supply the exact information needed or required which are necessary for this research.

Another important constraint was, information gotten may not always be authentic and could not be said to be very reliable.

Also, there was a financial difficulty in sourcing for information.

  1. 1.8Definition of Terms
    1. Glorified Brothels: In this research, the term glorified brothels refers to a special place where teachers and students pay money to have sex with prostituting students in their hostels.
    2. Abetted: In respect to this study, it refers to those teachers who aid and encourage students by having sex with them and others
    3. Sexual Behaviour: This refers to the attitude which is exhibited toward by male and female person toward sex.
    4. Multiple Partnering: This term will be used to mean male and female students having sexual relationship with more than one partner.
    5. Sexual Harassment: This is the way and mode of dressing to sexually attract other people by exhibiting some hidden or private parts of their body.

Therefore, this chapter discussed the meaning and concepts of information technology, how the various bodies can come together in the running of and monitoring of secondary institutions within their various communities, local, states and federal level.

The purpose of the study was identified and the various sources of information technology were highlighted.
