ABSTRACT
The study looked at the perception which residents of Uyo have of the public relations of the Nigeria Police. The survey research method was used for this study with population of 413,381. Data were gathered using questionnaire from three hundred and four hundred respondents. However, three hundred and eighty-nine copies were completed and returned valid for the study. The objectives of the study were to: find out the public relations strategies/activities of the Nigeria Police which residents of Uyo have knowledge of; know which of the public relations strategies/activities of the Nigeria Police residents of Uyo think is/are most employed; find out how residents of Uyo perceive the public relations strategies/activities of the Nigeria Police; and ascertain what informs the perception of the residents of Uyo on the public relations strategies/activities of the Nigeria Police. Affixed on the cognitive dissonance and individual differences theories of communication, it was found out from the study that: residents of Uyo have knowledge of Police Community Relations Committee; the public relations activity of the Nigeria Police which residents of Uyo think is most employed is Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC); residents of Uyo perceive the public relations strategies/activities of the Nigeria Police as insufficient to put them on a good light in the eyes of the public and the perception of the residents of Uyo on the public relations strategies/activities of the Nigeria Police is informed by what they read/viewed in the media. Data were analysed using tables and simple percentages. Based on the findings, the researcher recommended chiefly that The Police Reform Bill which has passed a second reading at the Senate should be implemented immediately it is passed into law. Finally, suggestions were made for further studies.
