ABSTRACT

Lower access of women in managerial jobs relative to men is well established in literature. This study examines the situation of women in management with a focus on gender based discrimination and women’s progression along managerial career path in selected manufacturing firms. The study was based on a survey design involving questionnaire administration and in-depth interviews. The respondents for this study were purposively selected from P.Z industries and Seven- up Bottling Company. Findings from the study indicate that while there is no official hindrance to women’s access into management cadre relative to men, and while there is a relative increase of women in management, wider traditional perceptions about women’s capacity to manage seem to be resilient thereby reducing their drive towards progression along managerial career.
